A few words about us and the program
Our team consists of young Biologists, Psychologists, Lawyers, students, Occupational Therapists and graduates of computer schools, who live and come from Syros. A program like the one we are planning brings us face to face with the challenge of applying what we have learned in our studies, through the design, elaboration and implementation of a voluntary and innovative program for the paths of Syros.
The composition of the team gives us the possibility of an interdisciplinary approach and this will be the innovation of our effort.
Through teamwork and the division of responsibilities for the implementation of the action plan, approved and funded by the European Solidarity Corps, each and every one of us will undertake and have specific tasks and areas of implementation of the program.
The important part of the promotion of the fauna and flora will be undertaken by the Biologists of our team, with bibliographic reports, field research and recording of the various species endemic to Syros.
The Psychologist together with volunteer colleagues from the KOINSEP OF CYCLADES, will plan the experiential activities for the groups of young people who will walk with us to discover not only the paths, but also their personal path in life.
The information of the primary schools and the Gymnasiums will also be among the goals of networking and implementation of informative actions.
This type of preventive intervention aims at the mental empowerment of the participants. Social and Emotional Learning programs, named after the fact that they are based on theories and models of socio-emotional development and learning, are defined as the process by which children enhance their ability to integrate thinking, feeling and behavior to accomplish important responsibilities in life. And this in the natural environment and the visit of the paths of our island.
For the promotion of the project, a website will be created with the presentation of the paths of Syros, for the exchange of good practices, reports, bibliography, there will be online lessons for teachers and parents and students (distance education / ecourses).
The online course will be published on the Moodle digital platform of KOINSEP CYCLADES, which will cooperate with us voluntarily and within the framework of its respective actions locally.
The participation of KOINSEP Cyclades in the program Live on the island, 619480-EPP-1-2020-1-IT-EPPKA2-CBY-ACPALA, will strengthen our program, through cooperation and corresponding actions with 8 islands from Europe, Africa, New Guinea, the Indian Ocean and Martinique!

Syros dominates the heart of the Aegean with the dynamic character and the cosmopolitan grace of a bourgeois. A sovereign power based in Ermoupolis, the capital of the island but also of the Cyclades, which maintains and highlights the glamor of another era, a history that unfolds through the labyrinthine alleys, the numerous old mansions and neoclassical buildings, the medieval Upper traditional Cycladic villages, the Orthodox and Catholic churches, the lacy shores, the blue sea and the fairytale natural landscape.
THE NATURE OF SYROS
Syros is so special and special since it can and does combine the rural landscape - in northern Syros or Apano Meria - with the residential tourist area in the south of the island.
On a tour of northern Syros, lovers of the Cycladic landscape will be left in the tranquility offered by barren nature with low vegetation and dry stones. This tranquility is also enjoyed by the migratory birds that gather in the area and rank it as one of the most important in Greece, which is why Mount Syringa has been included in the Community Network of Protected Areas NATURA 2000, with the following data:

SOURCE : https://www.syrosisland.grAnd where our landscape seems dry, right there we can find a wide variety of plants and herbs. The special microclimate, the strong sun, the sea breeze and the strong winds make the herbs of Syros have intense flavors, aromas and colors. The most common species are thyme , daffodil and sage , which you will see blooming if you are there in the spring. In the area you will find rare species of plants, such as mandrake, which contains a medicinal substance and is used as a laxative, as well as three species of saffron that are endemic to Syros.
In the southern part of the island, the residential development becomes more evident and coexists with lush vegetation whose main feature is the local clusters of pine trees.
The fauna of Syros is also of great interest. In addition to the kids that climb dry rocks and shoot on rocks up to the sea, the most initiated can observe birds, reptiles, amphibians, hares and rabbits. Throughout the island, and mainly in Apano Meria, 11 species of reptiles, the green toad (a species of amphibian) and 47 species of birds are endemic.

Paths of the Cyclades
Tasos Anastasiou (The persistent walker of the Cyclades)
He pioneered the revival of a network of trails in 21 Cycladic islands, actively contributing to the protection of the environment and the promotion of cultural heritage.
"Is it the same to reach the city of ancient Thira from the cobblestones that starts from the medieval village of Pyrgos and goes up to Profitis Ilias, by following the concrete road that, from the tourist resort of Kamari, ends at the same place?" says Tassos Anastasiou, a man who dedicated 25 years of his life to reviving the paths in the Cyclades. An employee of the Prefecture of Cyclades, he contributed to the restoration of the Cycladic paths and their emergence in routes of cultural interest, which now exceed 600 km in 21 of the 24 Cycladic islands.
Result; Off-season tourism is constantly increasing, the islands are finding a new way to strengthen the local economy and the environment is being protected in the most effective way.

From the beginning, human civilization has been identified with the tree and its fruits. Even before the man-gatherer learned to cultivate, the tree provided him with easy food, while later he provided him with timber for the construction of tools, houses, ships, fibers for his clothing, roots for medicinal use.In the stories told around the first people by fire, the world was presented in the form of a huge tree, which either rested on the ground and reached high in the sky or was again an inverted tree with its roots resting on the universe.
The fruit of the tree became a sacred symbol, songs and circular dances began around the trees. The tree was converted, deified, became a symbol of birth and renewal of life, the androgynous union. It was considered to contain the secret of eternal life and in the myths a dragon appeared standing next to him and guarding the fruit. Thus, Hercules stole the apples from the Garden of Hesperides under the nose of the dragon guard, while Jason killed the snake that guarded the tree with the golden fleece.

I WALK THE PATHS OF SYROS - I DISCOVER MYSELF
Syros, like all the islands of the Aegean, is scattered by paths that used to connect the settlements or led to places of water, suitable for cultivation or for watering the animals or finally, to beautiful and secluded beaches .. These paths today, from time to time they were walked by small groups of adults in order to get in touch with nature. . In these meetings, however, there were rarely young people under 20 years old. Nevertheless, in discussions that took place afterwards, especially with students, there were many who showed interest in getting to know their place. So there was a core of young people who wanted to participate in such activities. So the thought was born to discuss. FEREKIDIS undertook and suggested to teachers to design a program for teenagers to walk and get to know the paths of Syros.

The plants of Syros
In order to give as complete a picture as possible of the ecological conditions of an area, the Study of its flora, which concerns the study of the spread of plant species in it, is combined with the Study of its vegetation, which consists of the study of its plant formations. This is because it is not possible to study the flora of an area without knowing the exact type of its vegetation, despite the fact that no flora is related exclusively to the qualitative examination, diagnosis and affinity of the elements that make it up, and the vegetation relates to environmental factors and the effect of any changes in these conditions on plant species.

Within the framework of the program for the paths, an experiential workshop was carried out - action with the volunteers but also members of organizations from abroad - Alsace, France with the object of collecting grapes - vintage and the preparation of local wine with the Serfiotiko variety available by Social Cooperative of Cyclades .
Tourism is a massive social phenomenon with great demand that is constantly growing. In recent years, however, interest in alternative tourism has increased, as it is diametrically opposed to mass tourism, which has several negative consequences. Alternative forms of tourism place great emphasis on the wishes of the most "specialized tourists", are more friendly with the natural and cultural environment and require greater participation and support of the local community. In a country like Greece where tourism is a key sector of the economy and there are many remarkable naturalists and cultural resources, the development of alternative tourism is essential.
However, a precondition for the proper development of tourism is the correct methodology in planning taking into account all the design steps, selecting the appropriate strategies based on existing theories and successful examples of tourism development, always following the above design frameworks.

Walking tourism
Our Cooperation with the Hiking Team of Syros highlighted the importance of hiking tourism on our island.
Thematic routes are recognized as a rapidly growing form of alternative tourism that has flourished in recent years. The purposes of our meeting are :
- The highlighting of the importance of thematic routes, as a special form of tourism, in the development of places
- The identification of the possibilities that exist for more dynamic utilization and promotion of the natural and cultural wealth of Syros.
The tourism industry is considered an important source of wealth for the economy, but it can have significant negative effects on the environment. Thus, the need arose to ensure those conditions that would ensure growth, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This is exactly the content of the term "sustainable development" which is the ideological core of any modern tourism intervention with alternative criteria, that is, it respects the nature and culture of a place.
