Storytelling -Case 2

Opened: Monday, 15 January 2024, 12:00 AM

Ms. Smith is an 80-year-old woman who lives alone in a small apartment in the city. She has been diagnosed with heart failure and takes medication to manage her condition. Despite her efforts to manage her health, Ms. Smith has been struggling with heat stress due to the hot and humid weather in the city.

Ms. Smith lives on the top floor of her building, and her apartment has no air conditioning. She has been relying on a fan to keep her cool, but it has not been enough to combat the intense heat. Her apartment has large windows directed at the south, with no shutters.

Across the street where she lives there is a small park with several trees and a small pond. About once a week Ms. Smith goes out for a short walk in the park, where she likes to sit on a bench and watch children playing.

Ms. Smith has been feeling increasingly fatigued and short of breath, which are common symptoms of heart failure. The heat has also been causing her to experience dizziness and headaches.

Ms. Smith's situation is particularly concerning as she lives alone and may not have anyone to check on her. Her family members live out of town, and she does not have many close friends in the area. Fortunately, she gets along with a few of her neighbours very well. Every now and then they drink a cup of tea together. On the other hand, none of them is under 60 years of age, or vital. They struggle with different, age-related health problems.

Ms has, up to now, had no contact with the municipality. She is considering asking them for help with her household. But because of her financial situation, she has some reservations with respect to asking for support.

3.     Which interventions could the housing corporation undertake? How do you know these interventions are effective?

4.     And what could be the role of the municipality? Make a distinction between acute measurements, and long-term measurements.

5.     On the basis of your profession or professional education, what can you do to support Ms. Smith? Make a clear plan of approach and elaborate what your actions are, and who else you need to participate. Please describe the estimated costs (time, material) needed to realise your goals.
