1.5.3. When communicating via the Internet I can recognize appropriate behaviours to adopt on social media ... such as asking permission before publishing/sharing photos of other people (especially when children are concerned);

Acceptable behaviour on social media:

Respect the privacy of others. Don't tag them in photos or places, or share their posts, without their permission. If you see inappropriate social media behaviour, clearly ask for it to stop and keep a record of your request. If the behaviour doesn't stop, do not engage further.

Keep private things private. Don't share personal information, including passwords, your home address, inappropriate images, and gossip.

How do I ask for permission to upload a picture:

Once you have identified the copyright owner of the image, you need to contact the owner of the copyright to the image you want to use in order to ask for permission to use that image. In some cases, it may be an individual; however, in most cases, it is a company or an institution that owns the rights to an image.

Permission to post a picture of someone:

If a person would be able to identify his or her face on your post, you should ask for consent as soon as the photo is snapped. For the best protection, ask the person to sign a consent form and tag the person when you post the photo.

Negative aspects of social media:

  • Inadequacy about your life or appearance. 
  • Fear of missing out (FOMO). 
  • Isolation. 
  • Depression and anxiety. 
  • Cyberbullying. 
  • Self-absorption. 
  • A fear of missing out (FOMO) can keep you returning to social media over and over again. 
  • Many of us use social media as a “security blanket”.
