Understanding the News, Media, and Information Ethics

With the emergence of modern information and communication technologies, the reach and impact of traditional media has experienced exponential growth. In this era of information dissemination, through new and traditional media, we are guaranteed access to information beyond our immediate experience. This also contributes to fostering citizen participation in good governance within open, democratic, and stable societies.

New technologies have led to a surge in user-generated content, including eyewitness events reported on by citizens. By becoming media and information literate, people can not only analyse and evaluate facts and news daily but also exercise their civic responsibility by demanding fair and accurate news reporting.

The key objectives of this section are to :

  1. Unravel the fundamental elements that constitute news, shedding light on what distinguishes it from other forms of information.

  2. Analyse the interplay between journalism and society, emphasizing the role of critical thinking in navigating the complex media landscape.

 Think for a moment...

  • Are you mindful of the need to balance perspectives when consuming news?
  • Can you give an example of a news story that you found particularly compelling and why?
  • How confident are you in your ability to distinguish between news and other forms of information?
  • How familiar are you with the process of gathering, verifying, and disseminating news?
