Context of Media Today

Media provides a means of communicating information, designed to reach a wide and diverse audience. Traditional sources of media, digital platforms, and emerging trends in media, all influence how people access information and engage with content. 



The key objectives of this module are to:

    1. Understand the Evolution of Media: Provide insights into the historical developments of media, highlighting the transition from traditional to digital forms and the impact of technological advancements.

    2. Recognize Traditional Media vs. New Media: Being able to differentiate between traditional and new media, emphasizing factors such as audience reach, cost-effectiveness, production speed, interactivity, and the shift from 'one-to-many' to 'peer-to-peer' communication.

    3. Explore Digital Platforms and Trends: Explore the diverse elements of the new media world, including digital platforms such as online sources, blogs, influencers, podcasts, streaming services, and gaming. Being able to understand their roles and impacts on information consumption.

    4. Analyze Media Differences and Impacts: Evaluate the differences between traditional and new media, considering factors like author control, analytics, and audience engagement. Examine the impacts of new media on various sectors such as entertainment, journalism, and education.

    5. Emphasize Collaborative Content Creation: Being able to Highlight the encouragement of content creation and distribution enabled by modern digital tools, leading to a more varied and vibrant media environment.

By the end of the module, learners will have a comprehensive understanding of the evolution, differences, and impacts of traditional and new media, as well as insights into the role of digital platforms and emerging trends in shaping the contemporary media landscape.
