Copyright and Licenses
Copyright protects creative works, licenses grant permission to use them, Creative Commons offers standardized licenses, and copyleft ensures derivative works maintain the same freedoms.
The key objectives of this section are to:
- Understand the objective of copyright, to protect the rights of creators or owners of original works and to provide them with control over the use and distribution of their creations.
- Understand the objectives of Creative Commons, to provide a flexible and standardized way for creators to grant permissions for the use of their works while retaining some rights, thus promoting sharing and collaboration within the creative community.
Competencies you are developing:
- Understanding copyright law and its limitations.
- Identifying copyrighted material and permissible uses.
- Respecting intellectual property rights and ethical principles.
- Utilizing Creative Commons licenses and understanding their components.
Think for a moment...
- Have you ever downloaded or shared copyrighted material online without considering the legal implications?
- Do you understand the permissions required to use copyrighted content in your personal projects, such as videos, presentations, or social media posts?
- How often do you encounter Creative Commons licenses while browsing the Internet, and do you know how to interpret their terms and conditions?
- Have you ever faced challenges in attributing Creative Commons-licensed content properly when using it in your own projects?
